Metabolic Syndrome is Everywhere

Semaglutide for weight lossThose who are in the sub-clinical phase of aging (35-40) and those in the clinical phase of aging (45+) have a 1 in 3 chance of having metabolic syndrome. Many may not even know that they have it.  Unfortunately, Metabolic Syndrome is extremely common. Some of the most common symptoms are feeling sluggish after a meal or gaining weight and struggling to lose it. If your blood pressure creeps up year after year and your blood cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar levels are doing the same, then you may have Metabolic Syndrome. It is thought that this syndrome impacts over 60 million Americans and one in four adults over age 35. Metabolic syndrome sets the stage for catastrophic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and other age-related diseases.

What is Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic Syndrome is a disorder that develops very slowly over time – sometimes over 20 years. It refers to a myriad of conditions that occur together and increase your risk of chronic, co-morbid diseases and disorders such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. These conditions usually include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Excess body weight, especially central obesity
  • High blood sugar/insulin resistance
  • High cholesterol and/or elevated triglycerides
  • Blood clotting abnormalities
  • Low levels of antioxidants
  • Inflammation

If you have 3 or more of the above, you should consider yourself either having or at high risk of Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome Criteria

Making a metabolic syndrome diagnosis isn’t easy because it involves many different criteria and must be assessed on an individual basis. However, if you have  3 out of the 5 criteria, you could be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome.

  • HDL cholesterol levels that are 40mg/dl or lower in men and 50 mg/dl or lower in women.
  • Abdominal obesity, with a measurement of 102 cm or 40 inches in men and 88 or 35 inches in women.
  • Blood pressure that’s over 130/85 or higher.
  • 150 mg/dl or higher serum triglycerides.
  • Fasting blood glucose levels of 100 mg/dl or above.
