Semaglutide – Inflammation and the Immune System
In the past few years, Semaglutide has struck intense interest in investigating the myriad benefits of glucagon-like peptide Agonists (GLP-1RAs). The pharmaceutically branded forms of the medications are known as Wegovy and Ozempic. Ozempic is FDA-approved for diabetes, while Wegovy has become FDA for weight loss in most candidates with a BMI over 27. GLP-1RA’s ability to lower plasma glucose and induce weight loss has allowed them to be approved for treating diabetes and obesity. At The Natural Path, we have been using Semaglutide in our patient population for 3 years with fabulous results. I only continue to be inspired by the medication.
SEMAGLUTIDE FOR INFLAMMATION
Consistent evidence from in vitro studies suggests that GLP-1s have anti-inflammatory properties. It has been discovered that these properties may even modulate the immune system. The anti-inflammatory effects of Semaglutide target different pathways in different tissues. This shows that the anti-inflammatory effects go deeper than just weight loss. I love following the latest research on these topics.
As of now, GLP-1s have been used as a first-line drug in diabetic patients with high cardiovascular risk. Their ability to improve glycemic control with a very low risk of hypoglycemia makes them a drug of choice for diabetes. Semaglutide and other GLP-1’s seem to come with only a few side effects compared to the myriad of benefits. We are seeing a lot of pre-clinical studies being done to show that GLP-1’s can be helpful for inflammation and, potentially, immune regulation. Many phase 3 clinical trials are underway with data proposed to be published in 2025.
