What is the technique of Micro-Needling?

Micro-needling is an incredible rejuvenating treatment for the skin. It uses the skin’s natural ability to repair itself when it suffers from non-invasive physical damage. Immediately after an injury to our skin, the body begins the healing process by triggering new collagen synthesis.

At the Natural Path, we use a state of the art FDA approved micro-needling device that inserts tiny micro needles into your skin creating a gentle puncture to the skin. The micro-punctures bring the bodies healing attention to the skin and within a few weeks new collagen production can be seen.  Micro-needling has been shown to reduce the visibility of acne scars, reduced the size of enlarged pores, as well as, and smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. Micro-needling may also help improve skin tone and texture resulting in smoother, firmer and younger-looking skin without the side effects and downtime of other laser treatments. Micro-needling is safe for all skin types and many love the radiating glow that comes from micro-needling.

The Science Behind Micro-Needling

The concept of micro-needling is based on the skin’s ability to repair itself whenever it encounters any kind of injury.  Immediately after an injury occurs, the skin begins to dissolve damaged tissue and replaces it with new collagen for an improved appearance to the skin. Micro-needling allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair mechanism by creating micro “injuries” in the skin which triggers new collagen and elastin synthesis.  Micro-needling causes no down time and there is no risk of permanent skin damage. The result is smoother, brighter and younger-looking skin.

What to Expect During your Micro-Needling Treatment

Micro-needling has been described by some of our patients as a electric toothbrush rubbing against your skin. We sue a very effective numbing cream prior to the micro-needling treatment to decrease the discomfort felt with the procedure.  After the procedure, the skin can appear a pink/red color similar to a moderate sunburn.  Within a few hours the skin will return to normal color. Some patients experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated for a few hours.  Occasionally, we may choose to work a specific “trouble” spot a bit deeper which can lead to redness of the skin for 1-2 days post treatment.

Visible results will be seen about 6-8 weeks after the micro-needling treatment. We need to offer the skin time to produce collagen/elastin and create new tissue.  Depending upon the severity of lines/wrinkles, acne, etc it could take anywhere between 2 and 6 sessions to have optimal results. We like to space treatments out 6 weeks apart.  We find most patients have incredible results with 3 micro-needling sessions!
