The Avocado Seed in Your Smoothie
Believe it or not, avocado seeds are a high source of nutrition. If you eat avocado’s regularly like we do in my family you might want to keep the seed. I usually cut it into small pieces or grate it into small shavings and put it in a smoothie. The smoothie taste test in my family showed no change in flavor with half of an avocado seed blended in. So, give your body some additional nutrients and use that big seed that usually gets thrown into the compost! I recommend our phase III HCG Diet patients give this smoothie a try!
Health Benefits of Avocado Seeds
Most of the antioxidant properties of an avocado are found in the seed ~ actually 70% of the avocado’s antioxidants are packed into the seed. Recent studies have shown that phenolic antioxidant constituents in the avocado seed can lower cholesterol, reduce high blood pressure, decrease inflammation and improve the immune system. With other antioxidants such as catechins (also in green tea) and procyanins the list of inflammatory conditions that can improve is long. With the potent antioxidant flavenol this seed has cancer reducing properties. The seeds are also extremely antimicrobial and this is a nice benefit to offer the digestive tract. The avocado seed is also packed with soluble fiber. In fact, the avocado seed has more soluble fiber per ounce than most other vegetables.
