Body Recomposition over Weight Loss

LDN and weight lossBody re-composition is a different way to approach physical fitness. Setting re-composition goals can place you on the path to better overall health. Instead of just focusing on weight loss and watching the numbers go down on the scale – what if you focused on the fact that some of that fat might turn into lean mass and the scale number may not even reflect that change. This is why I love our InBody body composition analyzer. It allows us to look behind the number on the scale. Body re-composition is a fitness goal that focuses on optimizing your body composition. Rather than setting goals based on your body weight, body re-composition goals look at muscle and fat.

What Does Body Re-composition Mean?

For most people, body re-composition goals include not only cutting excess fat but also building more muscle, all at the same time.  Beyond your body weight, it is important to check other factors including~

  • Body Fat Mass, or the amount of  adipose or fat tissue in your body
  • Lean Body Mass – which is anything in your body that is not fat, including your Skeletal Muscle Mass
  • Percent Body Fat –  how your Body Fat Mass and Lean Body Mass compare to each other

Compared to weighing yourself, you might start seeing results by taking body measurements since muscle tissue is denser than fat.  The progress of body re-composition does not always show up on the scale.

Benefits of Body Re-composition vs. Weight Loss

You might ask – what are the benefits of emphasizing body re-composition rather than weight loss?

I find that some of my patients shy away from building muscle while they’re trying to lose weight because it might create a stall or even a small gain on the scale.  However, muscle mass is vital for optimizing metabolism and getting you closer to your fitness and body composition goals. Not only does training your muscles help you build strength, which can be used both in and out of the gym, but it also helps you increase your caloric burn for the day because muscle tissue uses more energy to maintain.  It’s also very important to maintain muscle mass as you age since studies have shown that having more muscle mass protects you from certain diseases and has been linked to a longer lifespan.

Losing body fat is also important to a healthy body composition as Excess body fat can cause an inflammatory response that can lead to a host of metabolic and chronic diseases including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Excess fat can also affect the structure of your body and create conditions such as sleep apnea and gastrointestinal reflux.

As opposed to general weight loss, body re-composition puts much more focus on getting rid of excess body fat rather than losing fat and muscle at the same time. By focusing on body re-composition, you’re getting to the root of the problem.
