Exercise can help you age with more vitality

In my medical practice, I work closely with over weight patients to educate them on healthy patterns of eating and living for optimal health. I meet people where they are at and it is not a “one sized fits all” approach.  However, there are a few nuts and bolts that everyone must incorporate and make non-negotiable in order to be their very best.  Exercise is one of those things.  All of our HCG Diet patients are encouraged to begin a daily exercise routine as soon as they get into phase III.

The Myriad of Exercise Health Benefits

Of course, we all want to look our best and exercise can do wonders for body composition.  However, there are millions of other positive changes that happen with exercise.

One of the key health benefits of exercise is its ability to  normalize

s
blood sugar, insulin, and leptin levels
.  Ultimately, it does this

by optimizing insulin/leptin receptor sensitivity.

The role that insulin and leptin play on body composition, weight loss and weight maintenance is amazing.  The hormonal aspect of weight loss and weight gain is one of my favorite areas of study.  Weight gain, weight loss and weight maintenance are far more hormonally based than the simple old calories in calories out way of thinking.

What Happens in Your Body When You Exercise?

From head to toe, there are physiological changes that happen in the body in response to exercise.  Here are just some of them:

• Muscles ~ with exercise, our bodies begin to use greater pulmonary function and therefore the heart rate increases and blood begins to go to the muscles.  Muscles need glucose and ATP for movement and contraction. In order for this to function efficiently, the muscles need  a greater supply of oxygen.  Exercise can “tear” our muscle cells which invokes a healthy inflammatory response.  The muscles actually become stronger as they heal.

• Lungs ~ While you are exercising, your muscles prefer 15 times the oxygen than they get at rest.  In order to make this happen, your breathing deepens and becomes more rapid.  The higher your VO2 max they say the higher your fitness level.  Exercise gets the lungs and heart pumping and moving.  No one wants stagnation in the heart and lungs!

Heart ~ We have discussed how the heart rate increases with exercise to bring more oxygenated and nutrient rich blood to the muscles.

The higher your level of physical fitness, the more efficient this process is and the harder and longer you can exercise without feeling fatigued. This contributes to the health of your whole cardiovascular system including your heart and blood vessels.

• Brain ~ Studies show that participants have increased focus and mental clarity post workout.  Exercise has also shown to promote the formation of new brain cells to help with memory and learning. The increased blood flow that comes from exercise is also beneficial to the brain and nervous system.  As a result, many people claim that they feel more focused after a workout. I know I do!

Beneficial neurotransmitters also get released into the blood stream with exercise.  Endorphins, GABA, serotonin, glutamate and dopamine are increased during and after a good workout and contribute to a greater sense of well-being.  Exercise is my favorite treatment for depression.

Joints/bones ~

As we age, bones can have a tendency to decline in density and strength.  Although exercise can put a lot of stress on bones and joints; it can also strengthen them when done properly. Exercise has a profound impact on bone density. Exercise that is weight bearing is a great treatment and prevention for osteoporosis.

Exercise can Make you HAPPY

In a study published in the journal Neuroscience in 2012, the

“secret” to increased productivity and happiness

was a commitment over the long term to EXERCISE!!!

Take a look at these images, showing the dramatic increase in brain activity after a 20 minute walk, compared to sitting quietly for the same amount of time.

Pretty amazing all of the things EXERCISE can do for our bodies!
